How Do We Publicize Web Sites?

Getting publicity for a Web site is one of the most important activities involved in its creation and maintenence. This is a lengthy operation and requires active coöperation and commitment from both the developer and the customer.

Publicity should be placed in print and broadcast media. This includes both special publicity to call attention to the Web presence, and also prominent mentions of the site's address on all other publicity.
Stationery, calling cards, and advertisements should all contain the Web site's address (the "URL" or Uniform Resource Locator). Email addresses are becoming as commonplace and expected as telephone numbers. For example:

Obtaining publicity from within the Web itself is a technical and lengthy process. Primarily, publicity from within the Web is obtained by getting links from related sites, industry-specific lists, and the general search indexes.
Some links will be obtained with ease (e.g., industry-specific lists); others require months of repeated contacts and email correspondence.
Getting listed by the general search indexes such as Alta Vista, Lycos, and Yahoo, is an art unto itself. The AltaVista service permits a rapid scan of the entire World Wide Web to see how many links there are to a Web site. For example, consider the Web publicity we obtained for radio station WSHU:
- After four years of our work, as of 7 March 2001, there were 1,350 references to WSHU (not counting internal references from within the station's own site). You can see those references by using the query

- There were 681 actual clickable links to the WSHU site from other sites on the Web, which you can see by using the query
