216 Color Palette GIF

This GIF image contains a 256 color palette in which 41 of the available colors are defined as black. The other 215 colors, together with that black, make up the 216 Color Palette. This means there is no color in the palette that cannot be displayed exactly by Netscape. To take advantage of this tool, apply the palette in this image to your own images.
  1. Save This Image: In Windows Netscape, save a copy of this image by right-clicking on it. On a Macintosh, click and hold on the image and drag it to your hard disk.

  2. Load This Image into your favorite image processing tool and save the palette.

  3. Load Your Image that you've created and apply the palette you just saved. This process optimizes your image for Netscape. No more dithering of colors will be done by Netscape.

You may notice that the Netscape palette does not contain many of the standard Windows colors. As a "work-around," you can take screen captures of Windows or DOS screens and apply the Netscape palette using the process described above. It will approximate the Windows colors with exact Netscape colors. While the colors won't be exact, at least you won't see the speckled dithering.

Other Web sites present similar pictures of the basic color cube, but, unfortunately, many of them contain 217 or more colors and are not ordered in a visually simple cubic manner.
